Meet the Charities
UOS is a volunteer-led charity that aims to use education, compassion, and collaboration to end homelessness in the UK and beyond. We empower individuals, companies and public organisations to be a part of the change, transforming lives and growing a utopian community, together.
For us, everything starts with the individual human being. Those we befriend on the streets are often referred to as “the homeless”, “rough sleepers” and other dehumanising terms. We call them our friends to both celebrate their individuality and to highlight the equality in our relationships. All humans have the right to the same treatment and respect regardless of housing status, ethnicity, gender, social heritage, or any other label. We act in accordance with our belief that humanity is one family.
The foundation of our work is the power of human connection. While we do provide food and warm clothes, our priority is providing nourishment for the soul. Compassionate human connection is the oxygen we all need to heal and believe in tomorrow.
Our approach of walking the streets to connect with our friends is rooted in dignity. Why ask someone who has nowhere to put their belongings to travel far for a meal or a conversation? Why exclude those who have severe physical or mental health challenges from receiving support?
We live by and demonstrate these values: Love, Service, Community, Magic, Compassion, Courage, and Impact.
Our mission is to work with others to end homelessness. For us this means supporting those affected to move from surviving to thriving in life, not only putting a roof over somebody’s head.
There are close to 300,000 people affected by homelessness in England alone. The majority are families living in temporary accommodation. In London 1 in every 53 people are homeless.
Our focus is on supporting those who face the toughest form of homelessness; street homelessness.
Under One Sky has served people affected by homelessness well over 100,000 times primarily in London. Each week we serve 500 homeless friends on average. Those interactions involve a conversation between an individual and the Under One Sky team as well as the provision of life supplies such as food, toiletries, sleeping bags, mobile phones and clothing. Our teams even take orders for specific items which are then delivered the next week if we have them in stock.
Our focus is on establishing a sense of friendship. What people living on the streets desperately lack is genuine social connection with other human beings who are not in a similar situation. The stigma associated with homelessness is enormous. Our teams rebuild trust in and reconnection to “society”. Through these conversations we learn about ways we can be of direct support or refer to other organisations for additional support.
We have supported many people off the streets by connecting them with housing and employment opportunities or helping them return home to family and friends in the UK and abroad. We also support people with life critical items such as glasses, wheelchairs and the like.
